Pavement Ants

Identifying Pavement Ant Problems

Pavement Ants (Tetramorium caespitum) are approx. 1/8 to 3/16 inch long, with brown to black bodies, but the legs are lighter in color. The head of the ant has parallel grooves and the thorax has two small spines near the petiole. These characteristics are visible with a hand lens.

Locating Pavement Ant Infestations

Pavement ants like to nest under concrete slabs, or sidewalks, and will often be seen coming out around the expansion cracks by doors, or along outside walls. Pavement ant infestations can be found on the floor foraging for foods, which include other insects, meats and greases. They appear to be more sluggish in their movements than the odorous house ant.

Pavement ant infestations tend to move along baseboards, especially baseboards in the kitchen and coming up under door sills. Look for dropped food, which is common when small children are in the home. Look for slow moving ants clustered around food or carrying dead insects.
